Ask ten people what Web3 is and you'll get ten answers, half of them trying to sell you something. So let me strip it back. What is Web3 at its core? It's a pitch for a third chapter of the internet, one where you own your stuff instead of borrowing it from a company that can change the rules whenever it likes. That's the whole idea in a sentence. Everything else is detail and noise.
I've been writing about this space for a while, and I'll be upfront: I find the central idea genuinely interesting and most of the marketing around it exhausting. Both things can be true.
The three eras, quickly
The cleanest way to understand Web3 is to look at what came before it. Web1 ran roughly through the 1990s and early 2000s. It was read-only. You opened a page, you read it, you closed it. Sites were mostly static documents, a bit like a library you could browse but not write in. There was no comment box, no feed, no profile. You consumed, and that was about it.
Then came Web2, which is the web nearly all of us live in right now. The shift was read-write. Suddenly you weren't just reading, you were posting, uploading, tweeting, reviewing, commenting. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, the whole social internet, that's Web2. And it's brilliant in a lot of ways. The catch is in who holds the keys.
Here's the part that matters. In Web2, you make the content, but the platform owns the stage. Your photos, your posts, your followers, your data, all of it sits on servers a company controls. They can suspend your account, tweak the algorithm so nobody sees your work, sell ads against your attention, or simply shut down. You're a tenant. A productive one, sure, but a tenant who can be evicted.
So what is Web3 trying to fix?
Web3 adds a third word to the pattern: read-write-own. The idea is to give users a way to hold their own assets, money, and identity directly, without a single company sitting in the middle as landlord. The technology underneath that promise is the blockchain, a shared ledger that nobody owns outright and that, in theory, no single party can quietly rewrite.
Instead of logging in with an account a company issues you, you connect a wallet. That wallet holds cryptographic keys that prove things belong to you. Your money, certain digital items, sometimes even your login identity. The pitch is that this ownership travels with you between apps rather than being trapped inside one walled garden.
A few building blocks make this work, and the jargon piles up fast, so let me keep it short.
- Wallets are the keychain. They store your keys and act as your identity and your bank.
- Tokens are units of value or access on a blockchain, from currencies to things that grant voting rights or entry to a community.
- Dapps, short for decentralized apps, are services that run partly on a blockchain instead of fully on one company's servers.
- DAOs are groups that make decisions by token-holder voting rather than a boardroom, at least on paper.
- NFTs are tokens that mark one specific item as uniquely yours, often art, but in principle tickets, deeds, or credentials.
Put those together and you can start to see the dream. A social app where you, not the company, hold your followers and posts. A game where the sword you earned is actually yours and can move to another game. An identity you carry across the web without handing your email to a hundred services.
The promise is real, and I mean that
I don't want to be glib about this, because some of it is legitimately compelling. The strongest argument for Web3 is that ownership and provability are useful primitives. If I can prove a digital thing is mine, and move it freely, and no gatekeeper can flip a switch and erase it, that's a real shift in power. It's the difference between owning your house and renting a room where the landlord reads your mail.
Portable identity is the piece I find most underrated. Imagine never building yet another profile from scratch, never losing your reputation when you switch platforms, never getting locked out because some support queue ignored you for three weeks. The plumbing for that exists today. That part isn't science fiction.
And the no-single-gatekeeper idea matters more in some places than others. If you live somewhere your bank or government can freeze you out on a whim, a system nobody fully controls stops being a tech curiosity and starts being a lifeline. I take that seriously even when the loudest voices in the room don't.
Now the honest part
Here's where I get cranky. The gap between the Web3 pitch and the Web3 you can actually use today is enormous. The hype got way out ahead of the product, and a lot of people lost money learning that lesson.
Start with the experience. Connecting a wallet, paying transaction fees, copying long addresses, signing prompts you don't understand, all of it is rough. Send funds to the wrong address and they're gone, no helpline, no reversal. We spent twenty years making the web friendly enough for everyone. Much of Web3 quietly undid that and called it freedom.
Then there are the scams. Because transactions can't be reversed and pseudonymity is the norm, the space has been a playground for rug pulls, fake tokens, and projects that existed only to separate optimists from their savings. That's not a footnote. For a stretch it was a defining feature of the experience, and the wreckage was real.
Decentralization itself is often more slogan than fact. Plenty of so-called Web3 apps lean on a handful of central companies for their websites, their data, and the wallet software people actually use. The blockchain underneath might be distributed while everything you touch routes through a few familiar chokepoints. Slapping a token on a normal startup doesn't make it decentralized.
And the question I keep coming back to: does this thing even need a blockchain? A surprising amount of Web3 is a clumsy version of something a plain database does faster and cheaper. Decentralization is a genuine trade-off, not a free upgrade. You pay for it in speed, cost, and complexity, and you should only pay when the trade is worth it. A lot of projects never asked whether it was.
Where I land on this
So what is Web3, after all that? It's a worthwhile idea wrapped in an absurd amount of noise. The ownership concept, read-write-own, is genuinely interesting and I think pieces of it will outlast the current cycle. Provable digital ownership and portable identity are good primitives, and they'll probably get quietly absorbed into ordinary apps where they make sense, without anyone shouting the word Web3.
But the grand vision of a fully decentralized internet replacing the one we have? I'm skeptical, and I think healthy skepticism is the right posture. Too much of what got built was a token in search of a problem. The useful bits will survive because they're useful, not because they were hyped.
My advice if you're just trying to understand the term: hold both thoughts at once. Take the idea seriously. Treat the marketing with suspicion. The people who got that balance right are the ones who came out of the last few years with their curiosity and their savings intact.
